Closing in on Ketchikan!

4-27-09

For over a week now we have woken to temperatures in the 30's with frost or ice on deck. The days have been sunny and clear. The scenery is just nonstop breathtaking.
We spent the 26th tied to a dock in Butedale and invited Lou the caretaker of 8 years to dinner. He had many wildlife stories of wolverines and white bears to share. There is still snow on the ground.

I think it was Nanimo when we first heard about a couple kayaking from WA to Alaska. We finally saw them today on our way out of Butedale. At least they have sunny days.

On a personal note;
Troy, thanks for reading our blog.
Hoptoad, I keep looking for you in each anchorage.
Jen, email your mom, you can't be that busy.
Denise, I need a mitten pattern I'm bored with socks, and Jim wears his slippers every single night, he loves them.
Mare, I'm working out 3 days a week but the coffee stop after is just no fun without you.
Inda, I'm working on crazy socks, hope they don't have to match.
Chuck and Margie, no mosquitoes yet but we are ready for when they come.
Donna, I lost your address, my mom sent the sticker to Hoptoad- you guys can talk.
Nanci, I sure hope you got Jenni's necklace in the mail, also I think I need your address-I have the old one.
Bern, How are you??
Mark and Ann we can't wait to see you for breakfast.
Vickie and Karl, yum!
Trish, every single day we thank you for the dodger.

Sightings today; Humpback whales, Dall porpoises, eagles, lots of other birds I don't know- sorry Dan- you'll need to wait for Jim to tell you.
Anchored in Lowe Inlet with a water fall behind us,in the evening huge ice chunks came flowing out the water fall and into the bay, it was pretty cool.
Cheers,
CSJ

Changes in Latitude

We were shocked to realize we've been gone 2 weeks already, time seems to fly by. We are about 6 days out of Ketchikan now. The wind is out of the north so we have sunny days and crummy wind, but fantastic scenery. A humpback whale surfaced in front of us a few days ago- came up with his mouth wide open, we thought we were going to hit him, but he smoothly dove and flashed his flukes at us. A swan flew by as did a humming bird, and of course lots of eagles.

To date we have anchored in Millbrook Cove, Kwakume, Kynumnpt Harbor and will be in Rescue Bay tonight.

Sailing

4-21-09

We are anchored in Bull Harbor at the top of Vancouver Island waiting for the wind to take us north. The sailing to this point has been fantastic. We have even had sunny days with southeasterlys. We have been treated to incredible rainbows, their colors extremely intense. There was an air show over our heads, they seemed to be the Canadian equivalent of the Blue Angels, performing rolls, spins, loops and made a heart with smoke. The most impressive stunt however was when all 9 of them buzzed us, they were so low we could see into the cockpits. The scenery in Johnstone Strait was brilliantly breathtaking. Cape St. James sliced through the quiet waters with steep snowcapped mountains on either side dipping down into the water. It was so peaceful, that is until a huge Killer whale surfaced right next to us and we both jumped in surprise. There has been a day or two of rain, that's when the new dodger proved its worth. To round out the trip as we approached Bull Harbor we were escorted by a pod of Dahls Porpoises playing in the bow wave. I can never get enough of them.

Anchorages; Griffin Bay, Bedwell, Montague Harbor, Nanimo, Fannie Bay, Kanish Bay, Port Neville, Pearse Island, Bull Harbor.

The only disappointment so far has been my Verizon phone. It has not been able to sent photos to the blog from Canada as I had hoped. Oh well.

Just Beautiful!!

Thank You dear,dear friends!!!

What a surprise to see all of you Friday morning at our favorite bakery, Larsen's. It was nice to be able to give Good Wishes to each of you as we go on our separate adventures.

I absolutely love the Yacht Vase. Jim put it up as soon as I got home. Thank you, it means a lot to me, I will think of each of you as we sail and put flowers from around the world in it. Best wishes to all of you. May you each follow your dreams.
