Catch of the Day

The Chignik seiner Shady Lady has her keel in the air Wednesday afternoon during the first opening in the Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery. One of the hazards of netting tons of herring comes when the fish decide to dive; working together the tiny fish can capsize a boat. The Shady Lady was righted and no one was injured in the incident. The seiner did sustain damage at the beginning of the opening when it collided with the F/V Confidence. the day wasn't all bad for the Shady Lady as the crew managed to keep 150 tons if herring. Seiners caught a quarter of the 18,293-ton quota Wednesday. (Photo by Joe Trotter)

We'd like to thank our new neighbors F/V Valkyrie for washing out their herring nets today so the brown bears don't come visiting us!!

6 Days and Counting!!

The seine boats are all ready and waiting for the word. Each day fisheries goes out and takes a sample of the herring. They are waiting for the fish to mature. Today the boats are on a 2 hour watch notice. It's been very interesting watching the process. For the last few mornings buyers and sellers have been in negotiations reguarding price.

I have a new respect for fisherman.

The big boats are coming in!

Things are really picking up here at the marine and in town. For the first time in months there are more than 10 vehicles on the road at once. More people in town (new faces) and activity everywhere you look. It surprises me how quickly we became accustom to the quiet small town atmosphere.
